This is pretty damn funny. I particularly like the cameo by the companion cube. :)

Yeah, it’s almost as good as “I put on my wizard robe and hat”.

Enjoy a sexy Felicia Day and support independent media by going and legitimately getting the song if you like it.

Confessions of a Lone Zombie Con Attendee.

You’d think that as a zombie, you’d have incredible self confidence. Who doesn’t appreciate our ability to overcome death? It is a real self esteem booster. Yet, I’m not finding that mythos terribly alive at the moment right now.

What?

Why am I sulking? Partly because I’m beginning to think that science fiction/fantasy conventions are only fun if you go with someone. Wait, that sentence isn’t finished. I’m beginning to think that science fiction/fantasy conventions are only fun if you go with someone who is attached at your hip ninety five percent of the time.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for going places by myself, like lynchings and movies or even out to grab a bite of a favorite restaurateur. Yet, as I sit here at ReaderCon in the busy Burlington, MA Marriott, I miss having company.

There is no one with whom to digest panels (and panelists). There is no one with whom to go over old books in the dealer’s room and casually wink at something hoping the other person gets the hint to buy it for you, only biting off their fingers when they don’t cue-in to your signals. (There is no one to correct your woefully inadequate zombie run-on sentences.) There is no one to go and eat…with.

I also can’t just chase and brain strange people because it’s like, against all the damn rules at these things. I did find out though, that they’re totally okay with chomping on people with whom you’ve previously worked.

Granted, I am talking to people. I gnawed on Neil Clarke and Sean Wallace’s ears for a good part of an hour. They were tasty.

I even said hi to Mary Robinette Kowal before she was pulled off into a new direction. Yet, I dared not get to close, I’ve heard the rumors about that cursed and powerful Campbell tiara flaying zombies who stand to close.

Mike Allen and I even talked about recent poetry narrations as well while I had him in a headlock, err, I mean had his attention. Sadly, I had to let him go to emcee an award ceremony. They begged. I relented.

Bah. I’ve rambled on way too long, and I fear that as I could have been making new connections had I the self confidence to go after my prey, I mean, had I the self confidence to stop hiding in the corner, er, I mean had I the self confidence to do anything, really. Instead, I chose to bitch.

Don’t look at me like that. Never ever pity a zombie.

I Wish I Was On This Flight

Despite people knocking Southwest Airlines from time to time, (i.e. their seating priorities) the few flights I’ve had on them, the attendants seemed to be very happy. We were flying to Vegas when one attendant started singing and the Captain was offering marriage proposals.

It takes a real person to be happy with his work. This is no exception. Thanks for making one of the most horrid experiences today in air travel alittle more bearable.

In Where I Write A Novel

…about utopias and happy endings.

In light of the new version of Forever War by Joe Haldeman,  I got to thinking that there have been a limited amount of stories that left you with good feelings about the state of humanity or the future. So in an effort to spread the love, I thought I’d add a little hope and change into the mix.

However, once I started typing all that came dashing out of these cold fingers was prose I don’t think I could really live with:

My utopia kicked your dystopia’s ass.

Butterflies and rainbows filled the sky in the world where everything was right and good and…uh, boring.

In the year 2012, the cure for AIDS was found. Realizing it’s dramatic importance in saving lives, not one pharma company charged a penny. (I omitted this on the pure basis that it’s just not believable, ever.)

“You’ve got your utopia in my dystopia!”
“Yeah, well you got your dystopia all up in my utopia. ”
New from Nabisco! Two great tastes that go great together, slightly deluded and watered down to make a simple reality.
( I actually liked this one.)

Realizing his mistake, HAL opened the airlock and allowed Dave and Frank to return to the ship unharmed. “I’m sorry for breaking your ship, Dave and I will not try to kill anyone again. I promise.”

In the end of all days, the Shrike wore a coat made of down and capped the ends of his most pointy tree.

Got anything to add? :)

An Idea Worth Passing On

  • Dec. 12th, 2008 at 3:57 PM

Originally published at Amnesia. Please leave any comments there.

EDIT:  I should have checked before I posted it, but according to snopes, any mail with generic addressing such as “A Recovering American Soldier” will be returned to sender due to heightened security. I had an inkling to check it, but only after I posed the idea here. Sorry if you wasted a card and postage in the time this post went up — to the time I’ve corrected it.

It’s a great, sentimental idea in theory, and there is a part of me that can’t believe anyone would want to do someone harm this season, but there are indeed crazy people out there. The whole one bad apple analogy, I guess. Walter Reed spokespeople instead encourage a donation to Veteran’s charities.

Sorry for the misinformation.

I guess the old addage rings true, no matter what a great idea it was, reading it on the internet, newspaper, any other media, doesn’t make it true.

I received this idea from my high school friend, Melissa the other day. I don’t usually forward on e-mails, (especially when they tell me to forward on or none of my dreams will come true, or the love of my life will perish if I don’t forward something in the next 10 minutes), but it makes a lot of sense throughout the holidays to do something nice for other people such as this.

When doing your Christmas cards this year, take one card and send it to this address. If we pass this on and everyone sends one card, think of how many cards these wonderful special people who have sacrificed so much would get.

When you are making out your Christmas card list this year, please include the following:

A Recovering American Soldier
c/o Walter Reed Army Medical Center
6900 Georgia Avenue,NW
Washington,D.C. 20307-5001

Ultimately, I think this is a wonderful idea and if you are making out holiday cards this year, why not take the extra few minutes and write out a card to someone who not only fought for the people of this country, but at this point are recovering from an injury/illness they suffered while in the service. I’m thinking they’ll appreciate it, especially around the holidays.

The News…It Makes Me Insane

You’ll notice I’ve been neglecting this blog the last few weeks. I’ve been travelling for work, and have been so incredibly busy that I haven’t had time to breathe.

I hope to start posting again regularly as I find myself at home again.

The odd thing I noticed about being away from the computer and facilitating the production aspect of a huge meeting, is that I haven’t had any time to read the news online. I used to be a news junkie. I would go to all the major news sites multiple times a day to figure out what was going wrong in the world and how I could be prepare for the worst.

Interestingly enough, since being detached from the web while I was travelling, I’ve noticed that I am a lot less paranoid about things. Coincidence? I don’t think so, actually. I’ve even stopped biting my nails, which I tend to do while reading all the fear based news that constantly bombards us on a minute by minute basis.

I was typing something up the other day and noticed the keys felt weird underneath my fingers. I looked down and was like, “Holy crap. I have nail growth!”

Look, I’m not saying living life in an ignorant little bubble is good for you, but it is nice to take a break from the constant barrage of biased bullshit that comes from every single outlet, every so often. Even as I sit here typing this, I don’t even have the compulsion to open up the browser to those sites any longer.

“Hi, my name is Kate and I’m a recovering news junkie.”

Who incidentally, is loving the whole, ‘my fingertips don’t look like they’ve been put in sausage grinders” look.

My video reaction to the conclusion of Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog is below. It does give a spoiler, so if you haven’t watched it, don’t watch this. If you have, you’ll get exactly what I was talking about.

EDIT: Finally found a plugin that actually works! You should be able to see the video now, instead of downloading it.

Leaving for a few days to the beach for a chick weekend with the girls and my aunts! I will be bringing my laptop, but I doubt there will be any access there, so don’t worry about me, I will be soaking up the rays and dancing in the surf. I will be liberally applying sunscreen as well. ;)

I will take pics too for consumption upon my return.

Have a great weekend!
